Two Su-34s and a Su-57 over the Black Sea: what the 15 July air track actually shows
Open-source trackers logged two Su-34s, a Su-57 and a Su-35 cycling through the western Black Sea before dawn on 15 July 2026. The launches never came. The posturing did.

At 02:34 UTC on 15 July 2026, the open-source flight tracker AMK_Mapping logged two Su-34 Fullback strike aircraft pushing west past Crimea toward launch positions in the western Black Sea, with Kh-59 and Kh-69 cruise missiles against Odesa Oblast flagged as the most likely payload. Six minutes later the same feed added a third airframe to the picture: a Su-57 Felon, Russia's only serial-produced fifth-generation fighter, joined the pair, with a Su-35S Flanker-E orbiting above as combat air cover. For roughly forty minutes, the geometry of the strike package looked like a textbook Russian long-range aviation profile. The launches never came. By 03:22 UTC, AMK_Mapping reported that the launch manoeuvres had been simulated using electronic warfare, while the Su-57 kept turning west of Crimea and continued toward its own launch line over the sea. The package flew on. The missiles did not.
What this publication is watching, then, is not a strike but a rehearsal broadcast in real time. Russia's air force has, over the past two years of full-scale war against Ukraine, used the Black Sea as a launch box for Kh-59-class cruise missiles, Kh-31P anti-radiation missiles, and the heavier Kh-22/Kh-32 system carried by Tu-22M3 bombers. A package containing two Su-34s and a Su-57 is not a routine anti-ship sortie, and it is not the profile of a Ukrainian ground-strike mission either. Su-57s have appeared over Ukraine only intermittently, usually in a standoff electronic-warfare or air-defence-suppression role rather than as bomb trucks. The fact that the type appeared in this particular geometry, against an Odesa-axis threat picture, is the news.
What the flight track actually shows
The sequence published by AMK_Mapping is granular. Two Su-34s transited west of Crimea in formation and held a launch line over the western Black Sea at approximately 02:34 UTC on 15 July 2026. The Su-57 joined the package shortly afterward, while a Su-35S provided high cover. At 03:22 UTC the tracker noted that the simulated launch phase had been conducted via electronic-warfare emissions rather than live fires, and at 03:23 UTC the Su-57 was repositioning to its own launch line further west over the sea. The implication is that Moscow ran the crew and the platform through the choreography of a missile strike against Odesa without ever breaking the ceiling into a real shot. The signals environment around Crimea has been saturated for months; running a launch rehearsal in it is also a stress test of the EW picture Ukraine's defenders and its Western partners are reading in real time.
The other reading is that this was a deliberate probe. Su-57 deployment is expensive in sortie-hours, and serial production of the type remains low. Putting one on a simulated launch line in the western Black Sea, where Ukrainian air-defence operators and Patriot operators in particular have shot down multiple Su-34s in recent months, is an unmistakable signal that Moscow wants Kyiv and its allies to know the platform is in the picture. Whether the Su-57 is itself flying a weapons profile or simply riding along as an escort that would, in a real war, push defenders to assume the worst, is the part the open-source trackers cannot resolve from ADS-B and ELINT alone.
The frame the wire does not give you
The Western wire cycle on this will, predictably, run on two beats: the threat to Odesa and the novelty of a Su-57 over the Black Sea. Both are real and worth reporting, but they obscure the more uncomfortable structural point. Russia's long-range aviation arm has been bleeding airframes faster than its defence industry can replace them. Su-34 losses since 2022 have been documented in OSINT tallies; Ukrainian strikes on Engels, Dyagilevo and other bomber bases have forced dispersal and put a hard ceiling on sortie generation. When an aircraft type that is genuinely scarce shows up on a simulated launch line, the operational signal is not that Russia is escalating but that Russia is signalling because it cannot afford the real thing as often as it once did. Rehearsal is the cheap substitute for execution.
There is a second structural layer. Cruise-missile strikes against Odesa have a specific target audience beyond Ukraine itself: Black Sea shipping, the grain corridor, and the states underwriting Ukraine's export routes. A Su-57 appearing on a launch line, even in simulated mode, tells insurance underwriters, commodity traders and NATO planners that the upper bound of escalation in the western Black Sea now includes a fifth-generation launch platform. Moscow does not need to fire to move that ceiling.
What Kyiv and its partners have to do with this
Ukraine's air defence in the Odesa axis has matured from ad-hoc Western-supplied surface-to-air kits into an integrated layered picture, but cruise missiles fired from launch lines in the western Black Sea sit at the edge of that layer. Engagement envelopes for Patriot and SAMP/T were not originally designed to fight salvoes fired from over the water at long range; the air-defence fight over Odesa has depended heavily on fighter intercepts, Hawks and, increasingly, on jamming and EW disruption of the missiles' terminal seekers. A simulated launch by an Su-57 is, in that sense, a particularly pointed rehearsal: it tests not just whether Russian crews can fly the geometry, but whether Ukraine's defenders react to the silhouette in the way Moscow needs them to. If Ukrainian SAM operators burn interceptors on simulated shots, the real ones get easier. If they hold fire, the Russians learn that the launch line is survivable.
For NATO, the operational question is whether the Su-57 over the western Black Sea is, today, a Russian problem or already a NATO problem. NATO AWACS have been a routine presence over the Black Sea since well before 2022, and alliance air policing over Romania and Bulgaria has thickened as the war has dragged on. The arrival of a fifth-generation Russian platform on simulated launch lines is the kind of incident that, if mishandled, gives an alert air-defence operator on either side an excuse to escalate. So far the geometry has been managed: simulated shots, no live rounds, predictable orbit. That is not a guarantee it will stay that way.
What remains unresolved
The sources do not specify whether the Su-57 was carrying Kh-59-class munitions or any weapons at all; open-source flight tracking cannot see inside weapons bays, and AMK_Mapping's electronic-warfare characterisation applies to the simulated launch phase, not to the aircraft's loadout. It is also unclear whether the package returned to base after the rehearsal or whether it transitioned into a different mission profile elsewhere in the Black Sea. The Russian Ministry of Defence has, as of this writing, not commented on the 15 July air track in any form this publication has been able to verify independently; absence of comment is not evidence of anything in particular, but it does mean the official Russian framing of the sortie remains an open variable. Ukrainian air-force channels had not, at time of writing, posted a public read on the simulated launch. Until they do, the dominant interpretation, that this was a deliberately observed rehearsal meant to be seen, rests on the geometry of the flight alone.
