Bavi's track from Manila to the Chinese coast lays bare the limits of regional disaster coordination
A single storm tore across four East Asian economies in under 72 hours, killed 17 in the Philippines, and exposed how thinly stretched early-warning capacity remains along the western Pacific rim.

Typhoon Bavi came ashore on the Chinese coast on 11 July 2026 after a four-country run that began in the Philippines, crossed northern Taiwan, brushed southern Japan, and finished its destructive circuit on the mainland. A storm that triggered fatal landslides in the Philippines within hours of formation was still climbing the East China Sea 24 hours later; the lead time that gave Taipei and Tokyo for grid preparation was bought partly by Manila's losses. In an ideal system, the upstream warning would have translated automatically into pre-positioned relief in the Philippines before Bavi's second and third landfalls.
