Russia's Geran-2 and Geran-4 aren't precision weapons, they're attrition tools
Two Russian jet-drone strikes on a logistics depot in Zaporizhzhia and a separate Geran-2 hit on a tram depot in the same city, within minutes of a strike on a parking depot in Koriukivka, recast the war's industrial arithmetic.

At 20:10 UTC on 21 July 2026, a Russian Geran-4 jet-drone struck a parking depot for Ukrainian military vehicles in Koriukivka, Chernihiv Oblast, according to OSINT-mapper AMK_Mapping. Four minutes earlier, two Geran-4s hit a logistics depot in Zaporizhzhia City that the same channel says was being used by Ukraine's military to house trucks. At 20:04 UTC, AMK_Mapping posted footage of a Russian Geran-2 strike on a tram depot in Zaporizhzhia at coordinates 47.793846, 35.225400. Three buildings, two oblasts, six minutes.
The arithmetic matters more than any single hit. The Western reading of Russian long-range strike campaigns has, since 2024, framed them as "terror" against civilians; the more useful reading is industrial. Russia is spending airframes, fuel and electronics to degrade the unglamorous backbone of Ukrainian logistics: parking lots, truck sheds, tram barns. None of these targets is glamorous. All of them are load-bearing.
What a Geran actually is
The Geran-2 and Geran-4 are Iranian-designed Shahed-class loitering munitions, produced under licence in Russia and rebranded. Their distinguishing feature is not accuracy. Civilian-pace GPS guidance and a small explosive payload put each one firmly in the category of an area-effect weapon, not a precision munition. A Geran that lands on a tram depot destroys the depot, the trams inside it, and the workers who happened to be on shift; the same airframe released against a parking lot full of military soft-skinned vehicles will damage some, miss others, and crater the tarmac. The economics are straightforward: an airframe cheap enough to lose, against infrastructure expensive enough that any loss matters.
That is the point. The Russian doctrine now visible across Zaporizhzhia and Chernihiv is the inverse of the precision-strike model NATO air forces spent four decades refining. Where Western doctrine accepts high cost-per-shot to minimise civilian harm and collateral infrastructure damage, the Geran doctrine accepts near-total inaccuracy to maximise the number of shots. A 100-vehicle fleet of drones, each carrying a small warhead, does not need to be accurate. It needs to be numerous.
The map keeps redrawing itself
AMK_Mapping's three posts in six minutes capture something the daily casualty counts miss: the simultaneity. Strikes against a vehicle park in northern Ukraine and against a logistics depot and tram shed in the southeast, in the same operational window, are not independent events. They are entries on the same ledger. Russian long-range aviation and Shahed-type launch crews operate against a target queue maintained centrally; the queue's contents on 21 July 2026 happened to include a depot in Koriukivka and two targets in Zaporizhzhia.
The choice of those targets tells a story. Parking depots and tram barns are the kind of infrastructure that survives a single cruise-missile strike intact, because it was never built to resist one. A truck depot in Zaporizhzhia matters because trucks are how Ukrainian brigades move artillery, fuel and ammunition within reach of the front. A tram depot matters for the same reason tram depots have mattered in every industrial war of the last century: a working tram is a way to move civilians and light cargo without consuming the diesel that the military needs. Disable the depot, and the tram system stops.
The parking depot in Koriukivka sits at the other end of the same logic. Chernihiv Oblast borders Belarus and Russia; military vehicle concentrations there are staging areas for forces moving toward the northern axis. Burning the parking lot does not destroy the vehicles, but it forces their redistribution, burns their camouflage netting, and consumes Ukrainian engineer effort.
The frame this war deserves
Two readings of these strikes compete for oxygen in Western outlets. The first treats each Geran hit as a war crime, or at least as a deliberate attack on civilians. The second, more common in Global-South and non-aligned commentary, treats them as the predictable output of a sanctions-isolated economy that has substituted cheap airframes for the precision munitions it can no longer import. Neither reading is wrong. Both are incomplete.
The honest frame is structural. Russia, denied access to Western electronics and to the satellite-guidance components that make precision munitions possible, has chosen to substitute volume for accuracy. That choice is rational inside the constraints it faces, and it is also the choice that maximises harm to Ukrainian infrastructure and civilians per airframe launched. Western press coverage that emphasises only the harm risks obscuring the industrial-policy logic; coverage that emphasises only the logic risks sounding like an apologia for the strikes. The view from Kyiv is unambiguous: the constraint is Moscow's, the harm is Ukraine's, and the airframes keep coming.
What to watch next
Three indicators will tell us whether 21 July is an aberration or a template. First, the rate of Geran-2 versus Geran-4 launches: the heavier Geran-4 is the model Ukraine's air force and electronic-warfare units have had the least time to adapt to. Second, the geographic spread: if OSINT mappers start logging simultaneous strikes on transit depots in Kharkiv, Dnipro and Lviv within the same hour, the centralisation of the target queue is confirmed. Third, the Ukrainian interceptions: a meaningful uptick in reported shoot-down rates would suggest that the air-defence allocation is finally catching up with the launch tempo.
