A Drilled Human Tooth, Worn on a String in Prehistoric Serbia
A human incisor, pierced and polished, surfaces from a Serbian cave site excavated two decades ago. The find reframes how Balkan foragers treated their dead.

On 21 July 2026, a team of Serbian archaeologists published a description of an artifact that had spent roughly twenty years in a museum drawer: a human tooth, drilled through the root and worn as a pendant, recovered from the Yablanitsa-2 cave site in southern Serbia. The object is small enough to fit in a closed fist, and the question it poses is not small at all. Whoever strung that tooth on a cord was carrying a piece of another person around their neck. The find, first summarised in the science channel NPlusOne's Telegram wire, adds a rare data point to a long-running debate about how pre-agricultural communities in the Balkans treated the bodies of the dead, and whether those treatments crossed the line from reverence into something stranger.
The Yablanitsa-2 assemblage places the tooth among a late Upper Palaeolithic / Mesolithic community living in the rocky limestone country of what is now southern Serbia, in the period when hunter-gatherer groups across southeast Europe were beginning to encounter, and be partially displaced by, the first farming populations arriving from Anatolia. The tooth is an incisor, the description notes, with a deliberately bored perforation running through the root. The bore is consistent with the suspension technique used for other known personal ornaments of the period, but the raw material is not. The thread is one of perhaps fewer than a dozen similar finds across European prehistory in which a human tooth has been modified into an item of adornment. The find is therefore not just a curiosity. It is evidence that the symbolic economy of late-Pleistocene and early-Holocene foragers occasionally reached into their own species for raw material.
The object and its setting
Yablanitsa-2 is a cave site, not a settlement mound. The tooth came to light during excavations conducted in the early 2000s, and has since sat in a regional collection while its description was prepared. The drillwork, according to the NPlusOne summary, is the key piece of technical evidence separating the tooth from a casual discard. Drilling a hard, curved root through to a usable suspension point without splitting the crown requires either a fine-tipped stone bit or a metal-tipped tool, and considerable patience either way. That is the signature of an object that was used, not a token that was buried.
The tooth's owner is, of course, gone. What the publication can say is what kind of person wore it. The tooth came from an adult individual, and the modification is too deliberate to be post-mortem butchery damage. Whoever did the work wanted the tooth to survive in a specific shape. That much the Serbian team appears confident about.
A small library of comparable finds
Across Europe, the inventory of human-body-part ornaments is thin but real. The most cited reference points are isolated teeth and small bone fragments from Upper Palaeolithic contexts in France, Germany, the Czech lands and the Italian peninsula, where pierced teeth and notched bones have been read as either trophies, mourning tokens, or kinship markers. The Bulgarian site of Durankulak and the Greek cave of Franchthi have each produced human remains with cut marks consistent with secondary treatment of the body. None of those finds is a perfect analogue. The Yablanitsa-2 tooth sits in a recognisable typological family, but it also sharpens the picture, because the modification is unambiguous and the find context is well controlled.
The implication that several research programmes have begun to draw, slowly and without overreach, is that late-Pleistocene mortuary practice in this part of the world was not one practice but a portfolio. Bodies were buried, cremated, defleshed, bundled, curated, and, on occasion, partly worn. Which option a community chose depended on the circumstances of the death, the season, the distance from the home base, and the social position of the dead. A pendant made from a relative's tooth is one more slot in that portfolio, and a particularly intimate one.
Why this find is being read carefully
Archaeologists are wary of two errors. The first is the Indiana Jones error: the temptation to read every pierced bone as a trophy of war or a cannibal feast. The evidence does not usually support that reading, and Serbian prehistorians have not made it here. The second is the mirror error: the temptation to project modern sentimental categories onto people who lived ten thousand years ago and who left almost no written record of what a pendant meant. The disciplined position is to describe the modification, place it in its stratigraphic and chronological context, and let the interpretation stay open.
What the new description appears to do is hold that line. The tooth is described as a deliberately modified human tooth, the perforation as deliberate, the wear as consistent with suspension. The question of whether the tooth belonged to a close relative, a notable community member, an enemy, or a sacrificial victim is not, on the available evidence, decidable. The most the publication can claim, and what makes the find worth reporting, is that this specific behaviour, the wearing of a human tooth as an adornment, has now been documented at one more site, in one more region, in one more well-dated context. The pattern is thickening.
What the find does not yet tell us
There are limits to the conclusion. The publication does not, as summarised, attempt to identify the individual from whom the tooth was taken through ancient DNA, isotope, or morphological analysis. The radiocarbon date for the tooth itself has not been released in the summary, only the broader dating of the assemblage. Without a direct date on the tooth, there is a residual possibility that the object entered the cave deposit later than the rest of the layer, an old worry in cave archaeology. The Serbian team is, by the standard of the field, cautious on these points. A fuller publication in a peer-reviewed journal will be needed before the find can be folded into wider models of Mesolithic mortuary behaviour.
There is also the question of sampling. The Balkans sit on the route by which farming spread into Europe, and the archaeological record of that transition is patchy. Yablanitsa-2 is one well-preserved site in a landscape where preservation is uneven. A single pendant cannot overturn a model. What it can do, and what the publication appears to aim to do, is to keep the model honest, by making sure that the human-body-part option is on the menu of possibilities wherever a late-Pleistocene burial is being interpreted.
Stakes beyond the cave mouth
The wider stakes are not national. They sit inside a slow-moving debate about whether early Holocene Europeans had a single mortuary grammar, inherited from a single African source, or whether the symbolic repertoire was already plural before the agricultural transition scrambled it. The new find suggests plural, locally inflected, and unafraid of using the body itself as a material. That is consistent with what geneticists have been arguing from the other direction: that the communities of the Balkan peninsula, including Yablanitsa-2's makers, were demographically continuous with each other across the Pleistocene-to-Holocene boundary, and that their symbolic lives were accordingly continuous too.
For Serbian archaeology, the find is a quiet win. The site had been excavated in a period when local institutions were underfunded and international fieldwork partnerships were thin on the ground. A well-described, internationally legible artefact emerging from that material, two decades on, is also a reminder that cave sediments keep. They keep for as long as no one digs them up and no one loses the notes. Yablanitsa-2's tooth waited its turn, and the discipline is slightly richer for the wait.
