On the morning of 20 July 2026, a party of hikers set out on the Howe Sound Crest Trail north of Vancouver expecting a brisk day. The route had come to them through Google Maps, which estimated the traverse at 5 hours and 13 minutes. They had to be rescued before they finished it, and the post that surfaced the incident on 21 July 2026 called the estimate out by name. The figure is a tidy one. It is also, for a roughly 29-kilometre alpine ridge with sustained elevation change, almost certainly a cycling or driving default dressed up as a walking suggestion. Google Maps is, by any reasonable measure, the default cartographic brain of North America.
