Lockheed unveils a half-price Patriot interceptor at Farnborough, betting lower cost unlocks bigger order books

Lockheed Martin used the opening of the Farnborough International Airshow on 20 July 2026 to unveil a new Patriot interceptor, the PAC-3 Adapted Capability Effector (ACE), priced at less than half the cost of the PAC-3 MSE round currently in service, according to reporting from the open-source intelligence account OSINTdefender and the conflict-tracker channel Clash Report. The PAC-3 MSE has been quoted at roughly $4 million per round; the ACE, in Lockheed's framing, sits below the $2 million mark.
That price line is the news. The interceptor itself matters, but the per-round economics are what the airshow crowd, and the procurement planners back in Washington, Tokyo, Berlin and Riyadh, are actually buying.
A missile built for a budget, not a brochure
Patriot has spent two decades as the flagship of Western ground-based air defence. Its interceptors are widely regarded as the benchmark hit-to-kill weapons of their class, and they have done real operational work in Ukrainian and Israeli airspace in recent years. The catch is volume: at roughly $4 million per MSE round, even deep-pocketed customers can only buy so many.
Lockheed's pitch at Farnborough is that ACE reuses the MSE's seeker, warhead and ground-segment integration, and strips cost out of the airframe, propulsion and production process. The stated target, less than half the unit price, would put a single round below $2 million. If Lockheed holds that line in serial production, the math on a Patriot battery changes substantially. A battery optimised for saturation raids, which require dozens of rounds per engagement, becomes fundable at a different scale.
What the rival platforms look like
The competitive set is small. On the Western side there is no other hit-to-kill Patriot-class interceptor in serial production. The cheaper end of the market is occupied by legacy PAC-2 rounds, which remain effective against a narrower set of threats and have not been quoted at MSE prices for years. European equivalents, including the SAMP/T Aster family co-produced by France and Italy, sit in a different cost band and a different export-control regime.
The structural argument inside Lockheed is that ACE sits between PAC-2 and MSE on price, without surrendering MSE-class performance against the threats that matter most: tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and large drones. OSINTdefender's coverage emphasised the lower price as the headline; Clash Report's note framed it as a marketing line aimed at opening larger orders rather than a like-for-like technical replacement.
Why now
The airshow announcement lands in a specific market. Ukraine has burned through Patriot rounds at a rate that surprised even planners in Washington, and resupply has been the binding constraint on Kyiv's ability to defend cities against Russian ballistic missile strikes. Israel ran PAC-3 interceptors during the April-May escalations with Iran. Gulf states, watching the same trajectory, have been pressing for delivery schedules that outrun current production. Berlin and Warsaw have placed orders of their own in the last eighteen months.
In each case, the procurement question is no longer whether Patriot works. It is whether the supplier can make enough of them, fast enough, at a price the customer can absorb. A $2 million ACE rounds into the same magazine as a $4 million MSE, but the customer can buy roughly twice as many for the same budget. For Patriot's biggest buyers, that arithmetic is the entire conversation.
What to watch from here
Three concrete signals will determine whether ACE is a procurement story or a press-release story. First, a binding order, with a unit price attached, from any of the existing Patriot customer states. Second, a clear production-rate commitment from Lockheed, in rounds per month, rather than a forward-looking ceiling. Third, the first published kill-chain performance data, ideally from an operational theatre, that demonstrates MSE-class intercept reliability at the new price.
Until then, what Lockheed has done is narrow the question. The air-defence market is no longer debating whether Western interceptors can hit what they are aimed at. It is debating how many of them can be built, and at what price. Farnborough's headline is that Lockheed believes it can answer both.
