For men, receiving an early-career fellowship translated into a real but modest lift in citations over the following ten years. For women, the lift was noticeably larger. A fellowship is not a prize; it is buying time. It shields a junior investigator from grant-writing churn long enough to publish, accumulate data, and become visible to senior collaborators. Why timing, not just money

What funders should do with this
Two readings are available, and both deserve weight. The optimistic one is that the existing early-career pipeline works, and that expanding it would compound. The sceptical one is that a system requiring women to capture a specific, scarce, well-timed grant in order to reach parity is, by construction, fragile.
