Europe's June heat killed at least 12,000. The wetlands that could blunt the next one are vanishing faster than they're being mapped.
National statistics offices across nine European countries have tallied at least 12,000 excess deaths during June's heatwave, while a new study warns the continent's most climate-critical wetlands are slipping through conservation planning.

At least 12,000 people died across nine European countries in June 2026 in excess mortality attributable to a heatwave that settled over the continent for the better part of three weeks, according to national statistics agencies reporting on 17 July. The toll is provisional: health ministries warned that final figures will rise as regional offices reconcile their counts and as deaths from the second half of the month finish registering.
The numbers, drawn from nine national vital-statistics systems, give the clearest picture yet of what a single month of sustained heat now costs a wealthy, aging, air-conditioned continent. They also arrive alongside a separate study published on 15 July identifying the European wetlands whose preservation would do the most to blunt the next one. Taken together, the two reports sketch a policy problem with a deadline: the climate-buffering ecosystems Europe most needs are being catalogued more slowly than they are being lost.
The shape of June's toll
Excess-mortality counting is unforgiving arithmetic. It compares observed deaths in a window against the baseline a country would expect given the season, the population, and recent flu activity. Anything above that baseline is, by construction, deaths that would not have happened on an average June. The nine-country total of roughly 12,000 is therefore a conservative floor; it excludes countries still finalising their figures, and it captures only June, not the heat that has lingered into July across southern and central Europe.
The pattern inside the aggregate is familiar from the continent's previous record-shattering summers. Older adults, particularly women over 75 living alone in poorly ventilated apartments, make up a disproportionate share. Urban heat islands, where asphalt and concrete radiate through the night, drive the local death rates well above the rural averages. Air conditioning, the cheap defence, is unevenly distributed: more than a third of southern European households still do not have it, and the share is higher among the over-80s who need it most. National heat-health plans, expanded after 2003 and again after 2022, appear to have reduced the case-fatality rate per degree of warming. The denominator, however, has grown faster. The exposures are happening on a hotter baseline, and the exposures are lasting longer.
The reporting note attached to the figures is worth reading for what it does not say. The agencies do not attribute individual deaths to a specific temperature threshold. They do not estimate how many were preventable with better housing, more cooling centres, or earlier warnings. Those calculations come later, in epidemiological papers that take months to peer review. For now the public-facing claim is narrower and starker: roughly 12,000 people who would be alive on an average June are not.
What the wetlands study actually found
The wetlands study, published on 15 July and running to several hundred sites across the continent, is the kind of inventory that should have existed a decade ago. It ranks European wetlands by their combined value for carbon storage, flood buffering, summer cooling, and biodiversity, then asks which of them sit inside protected-area networks. The headline finding is that the highest-value sites are not the highest-protected ones. A long list of peatlands, river floodplains, and coastal marshes that the authors classify as "critical" for climate adaptation fall outside the EU's Natura 2000 network, outside national park boundaries, and outside any binding conservation plan.
That mismatch is not a surprise to anyone who has followed European conservation policy. The continent's protected-area maps were drawn mostly in the 1990s and early 2000s, when the priority was charismatic habitat and rare species. Climate-adaptation value was layered on afterwards, and unevenly. The new study tries to re-rank the map on the new criterion, with the explicit argument that the next round of EU nature-restoration funding should follow its lead.
Why the two stories belong in the same article
The temptation is to file each report under its own desk: health on one side, conservation on the other. The connection is structural. Wetlands cool the air immediately around them through evapotranspiration, a process that becomes more valuable precisely when temperatures spike. A peatland that holds a metre of water is a regional air conditioner in July and a flood brake in November. A drained peatland is a carbon source and a fire risk, the way agricultural drains and climate stress have been converting European farmland into tinder.
A continent that loses its wetlands while installing more air conditioners is, in plain terms, paying twice. Once for the energy and capital expenditure of mechanical cooling. Once, in deferred losses, for the natural infrastructure that would have done the work for free. The June death toll is, among other things, the invoice for the cooling bill the continent has not yet got around to.
The reading that should not be rushed past
Two caveats belong in the margins of any confident summary. First, the nine-country aggregate is not a European total. Countries with the largest land area, Germany and France among them, contribute the most deaths; countries with the smallest populations, several in the Balkans, contribute the fewest. The per-capita picture is different from the absolute one, and the two rankings point at different policy priorities. Second, the wetlands study identifies priorities, not outcomes. Naming a marsh as critical does not protect it. The follow-through depends on national ministries, on EU funding cycles, and on the politically unfashionable work of telling landowners what they may not do with their own ground.
The honest framing is therefore narrower than the climate literature usually allows. Europe knows how to count its dead after a heatwave, and it increasingly knows which wetlands would have made the next heatwave less lethal. The distance between those two pieces of knowledge, and the speed with which it closes, is the variable worth watching.
