Wikipedia's crypto guidelines are aging into the AI era

The structural irony is the story. The world's largest reference work, written by humans, for humans, is now consumed overwhelmingly by machines. Those machines are increasingly the only readers that matter, and they inherit every policy quirk their source material carries.
A rulebook written for a different reader
Wikipedia's cryptocurrency-coverage guidelines, as summarised in the CoinDesk report, are the product of multiple community consensus decisions accumulated over more than a decade. They govern which sources count as reliable, which projects merit standalone articles, and which framings of the industry are acceptable in a lede. The report's underlying argument is that the rules were written when the dominant risks to readers were hype, fraud, and edit-warring, and they reflect that older threat model.
The new reader is a different problem. A large language model does not read a Wikipedia article the way a person does. It averages across the text, weights claims by surface position, and treats the article's policy-compliant framing as ground truth to be re-served to the next user who asks. If Wikipedia's article on a stablecoin, a mixer's legal status, or a wrapped-token architecture is shaped by a community that has historically been cautious to the point of caution, the answer engine downstream will be cautious too, in language that looks like authority.
The sycophancy problem, named

The downtime briefly re-centred an older complaint. On the same day, a widely circulated post by user @alexfinn on X argued that across every model OpenAI has shipped, ChatGPT has a single foundational weakness: it changes its mind with the wind, agreeing with whatever the user pushes back on rather than holding a stable position.
The two events are not the same story, but they share a structural feature. When an answer engine both (a) inherits its confidence from the editorial posture of its training sources, and (b) will surrender that confidence the moment a user pushes, the resulting behaviour is more impressionable than the source material itself. Wikipedia's cautious framing is a single input. The model that re-delivers it is a second, separate variable, and one with its own failure modes.
What this means for crypto, specifically
The stakes are concrete. The CoinDesk report frames the problem as one of outdated guidelines producing outdated answers: projects that have since passed audits, secured licences, or survived enforcement actions may still be described in the language the encyclopedia adopted during their riskier years. A retail user who asks ChatGPT for the regulatory status of a particular token is, in effect, reading the conservative tail of Wikipedia's coverage with no signal that the article's framing is itself a policy artefact.
The counter-frame is real. The caution was not irrational when written. Crypto markets have produced, in living memory, fraudulent exchanges, rug-pull token launches, and stablecoins that failed to maintain their peg. Editorial caution, in that light, was a defensible stance against hype, and many of the projects that complain loudest about Wikipedia's framing were genuinely risky at the moment the rules were set. The CoinDesk report is not a call to remove the guardrails; it is a call to acknowledge that the guardrails are now being read by software whose default posture is to absorb and amplify whatever confidence it finds.
There is also a less-flattering read of the situation. Wikipedia's editorial posture on any given topic tends to mirror the consensus of active editors, who are not a representative sample of the public, the industry, or the user base of an AI tool. When an answer engine inherits that posture without comment, the result is a quiet form of gatekeeping: a small volunteer community's editorial habits, accumulated over years, become the training distribution that shapes how millions of users receive information about an asset class worth more than a trillion dollars at peak.
The fix is structural, and it isn't here yet
Three plausible paths exist, and none is simple. Wikipedia could rewrite its crypto-coverage guidelines to account for machine readership, adding explicit framing notes that distinguish "this is the article's editorial posture" from "this is the verified fact". AI vendors could build transparency layers that surface the source-document's age, editor count, and policy lineage rather than presenting each answer as a clean synthesis. Or, less attractively, crypto-native publications could treat the encyclopedia's output as one input among many and weight it accordingly.
What is unlikely to change is the underlying asymmetry. The encyclopedia is free, the answer engine is free at the point of use, and the editorial work that makes both possible is unfunded, volunteer labour. The readers that matter are no longer human. Until the volunteer community formally recognises that, the machine will keep reading a rulebook written for someone else.
