Where the pavement ends: the reckoning between unhoused people and urban wildlife
As encampments edge deeper into parks and riverbanks, biologists and outreach workers say the next phase of the homelessness crisis will be measured in bites, infections and broken habitats.

On a stretch of riverside park in a mid-sized North American city, a wildlife biologist watches a coyote cross a footpath at dusk. Twenty metres away, beneath a canvas tarp, two people are settling in for the night. Neither party is unusual; what is unusual is the distance between them.

Second, whether park departments begin publishing wildlife-encounter logs down to the encampment scale, with the geographical precision that emergency departments are already recording. Third, whether shelter capacity, especially low-barrier and pet-friendly shelter capacity, expands enough to shift the average sleeping location back inside the serviced footprint of the city.
