A new colobus in the Congo: an orange-lipped monkey joins the primate record
A team led by John Hart has described a new colobus monkey from the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo, distinguished in part by unusually vivid facial markings. The find lands in a country where wildlife science and mineral politics routinely collide.

On 15 July 2026 a team of primatologists formally added a new species to the African colobus monkey genus, a red-and-black animal distinguished from its closest relatives by unusually vivid orange lips set against an otherwise dark face. The paper, by John Hart of the Lukuru Wildlife Research Foundation and colleagues, appears in PLOS One and rests on fieldwork across the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The discovery matters for reasons that go beyond the colour of one animal's mouth. African primate taxonomy is being rewritten, piece by genetic piece, at a moment when the forests those primates inhabit are under accelerating commercial pressure. A species described in 2026 has already been living through a decade of deforestation, artisanal mining expansion, and the long shadow of armed conflict that complicates everything from ranger patrols to export permits.
What the paper actually says
The team places the new monkey in the genus Piliocolobus, the red colobus group, with a particular facial phenotype that includes those vivid orange lips and a chest pattern the authors describe as distinct from named congeners. Hart's Lukuru Wildlife Research Foundation has spent decades building the field record in the DRC's central forest block, and the description draws on photographs, morphological measurements, and the geographic spread of sightings in the paper's supplementary materials, according to PLOS One's open-access format. The species was not pulled from a Petri dish or a leaf packet in a museum; the recognition rests on the kind of patient, in-country observation that has become harder to fund outside the conservation non-profit sector.
Because the description is being published in PLOS One rather than a subscription journal, the type specimens, photographs, and acoustic notes are accessible to other primatologists without paywalls. That matters in a field where taxonomic revisions routinely generate disputes; an open-access description invites challenge rather than shielding the work behind a subscription.
What it isn't
A species this conspicuous should have shown up in earlier surveys, and that gap is part of why the paper reads carefully. The authors are not claiming a creature hiding from science. They are claiming that a population long folded into a known species by fieldworkers using field guides is in fact distinct. That distinction is forensic, not dramatic. Treatises on African primate taxonomy in the 2010s routinely collapsed several red colobus forms into Piliocolobus tephrosceles; the more granular picture emerging in the 2020s is that several of those forms deserve separate species status. The Congo basin is the laboratory where that argument is being settled, slowly, one paper at a time.
A second thing to flag: a new-species paper does not by itself create a conservation regime. The International Union for Conservation of Nature must still assess the animal against its Red List criteria before any legal protections attach. Until that listing exists, the animal sits in a regulatory no-man's-land.
The forest it lives in
The geographic backdrop is the harder story. The DRC holds more primate diversity than any country on Earth, and it has lost more primary forest than almost any country on Earth over the same period. Industrial logging concessions, charcoal production for the country's cities, and the clearance tied to artisanal and small-scale mining of cobalt, coltan, and gold all impinge on the same river catchments where colobus monkeys live. Conservationists argue, with documentation, that the loss is non-linear: once a forest fragment drops below a threshold, the resident primates are functionally lost even if the canopy looks intact.
This is why a species description lands differently in the DRC than it would in Brazil or Borneo. The taxonomy is settled first; the survival argument comes after. And in the DRC, the survival argument is bound up with a political settlement that has eluded the country for three decades, with mineral supply chains that link to electric-vehicle battery demand in Asia and Europe, and with a ranger corps that operates under conditions few of its western counterparts would recognise.
A useful comparator is Uganda, where red colobus populations have been the subject of long-running conservation efforts that have produced population estimates, habitat corridors, and tourism revenue. The DRC's record on all three is thinner, and the gap is structural rather than incidental.
What to watch next
Three signals will tell whether this paper changes anything on the ground. First, the IUCN Red List assessment, which can be expected within a year given the open-access publication of supporting data. Second, whether the discovery prompts a pause or restriction on the forestry concessions that overlap the relevant range; the DRC's industrial logging permits are due for renegotiation in the late 2020s, and new endemic species are usually cited as an argument against extending them. Third, whether genetic work already in progress at collaborating institutions confirms or complicates the species boundary.
The honest counterpoint is that primate taxonomy in the Congo basin has produced a series of high-profile new-species claims over the past decade, several of which have been challenged or quietly revised after further sampling. The pluralist read is that this is how taxonomy is supposed to work; the sceptical read is that the field's incentive structure rewards description over reconciliation. The strongest read of the present paper is that it has done the first half of the job carefully and the second half will fall to the institutions that review it.
