Padavic-Callaghan writes for New Scientist, the London-based weekly that has spent decades translating the frontiers of physics, biology and cosmology for lay readers. Her first book fuses memoir with science writing: the author moves between her father's declining health and the equally baffling behaviour of subatomic particles, and finds that the two subjects explain each other. The result is a slim, hybrid volume that treats quantum entanglement less as laboratory curiosity and more as a metaphor precise enough to carry genuine emotional weight.
A book built on two clocks
The personal thread runs through the book's spine. The author's father is ill; her family gathers in the hospital; she watches him change in ways that are themselves difficult to observe directly. The scientific thread runs alongside. Particles, once entangled, behave as a single system even when separated by distances that defeat everyday intuition. Measurement on one determines the state of the other, instantaneously, in defiance of the cosmic speed limit.
What Padavic-Callaghan argues, gently and without forcing the point, is that the strangeness is the same strangeness on both sides. Families, like particles, develop correlations that outlive separation. The bedside vigil mirrors the lab notebook. The two clocks tick in counterpoint, and the reader is asked to hold both in mind at once.
This is not a "popular science" book in the older sense. There are no cartoon atoms, no cheerful analogies to bouncing balls. The quantum material is presented at full density: Bell tests, decoherence, the measurement problem, the difference between correlation and causation. But the prose never loses its human footing. Technical passages are anchored to scenes; scenes are anchored to people with names, voices, and the small frictions of hospital routine.
The reporter's instinct, applied inward
What makes the book unusual is the craft of the reporter turned on her own life. Padavic-Callaghan's professional habit is to ask questions, follow evidence, and refuse easy closure. She applies the same instinct to grief. The dying father is not rendered as saint or symbol; he is rendered as a person with bad jokes, political opinions, and the particular dignity of a man who knows what is happening to him.
The physics is treated with equal respect. The book does not exaggerate the strangeness of quantum mechanics to sell copies, nor does it domesticate the strangeness into something comfortable. Entanglement really is weird; the measurement problem really is unsolved; the philosophical debates about what quantum mechanics means are genuinely live. The author conveys all of this without pretending that the experts agree, which is itself a kind of honesty the genre often lacks.
There is a quieter argument running underneath the personal and scientific material. The dominant popular-science narrative, in recent years, has been that quantum mechanics vindicates mysticism: that Eastern philosophy "predicted" entanglement, that consciousness "collapses the wave function," that meditation and quantum healing belong in the same sentence. Entangled States treats this kind of talk with the polite scepticism it deserves. The weirdness of the quantum world is enough on its own terms; it does not need to be recruited for therapeutic self-help. Padavic-Callaghan's reporting discipline, trained on actual papers rather than TED talks, refuses the bait.
What the genre usually gets wrong
Popular physics books tend to fail in two opposite directions. The first is the bestseller mode: a charismatic author, a thin scientific scaffold, a few breezy anecdotes about Einstein's socks. The second is the lecture mode: a serious scholar, ten chapters of careful derivation, and a reader who has long since drifted. Both treat the science as either entertainment or instruction, never as a way of seeing.
The hybrid form Padavic-Callaghan attempts is harder. The memoir cannot collapse into sentiment; the physics cannot collapse into jargon; the two have to speak to each other without one becoming a decoration for the other. On the whole, the book succeeds. The passages that risk sentimentality are saved by the dryness of the physics; the passages that risk abstraction are saved by the bodily detail of the hospital. The balance is delicate, and it holds.
What the book leaves open
Not everything lands. The quantum material, presented honestly, is genuinely difficult; readers without any prior exposure may find themselves re-reading paragraphs, and the book does not always reward the effort. The memoir thread, while moving, occasionally tilts toward the elliptical at moments where a more direct sentence would have served the reader better. And the central conceit, that the two clocks are doing the same thing, is asserted more than it is argued; a reader unconvinced by metaphor may remain unconvinced.
What is beyond dispute is the seriousness of the attempt. Entangled States treats both its subjects, a parent and a set of equations, with the attention they are owed. In a publishing landscape that too often offers either pop simplification or academic gatekeeping, the book stands as evidence that the middle ground is not only defensible but, in careful hands, beautiful.
The father dies, of course; the book is honest about that. The particles, whatever they are doing, keep doing it. The reader closes the volume with the unusual feeling of having learned something about physics and about loss in the same motion, and of suspecting that the two were never as separate as the lecture hall implied.
