A new harvester ant in the Eastern Rhodopes: what Messor odrysarum tells us about Mediterranean biogeography
A Bulgarian-led team has named a new harvester ant from the Eastern Rhodopes, the latest in a slow redrawing of the Mediterranean's insect map.

On a sun-bleached slope above the Arda river valley in Bulgaria's Eastern Rhodopes Mountains, a team of entomologists has pulled a small, seed-storing ant out of the soil and given it a name fit for the Thracian tribes who once held the same ridgelines. The species, Messor odrysarum, was described on 14 July 2026 by an international group led by Albena Lapeva-Gjonova of Sofia University, the journal ZooKeys confirming the find after months of cross-checking worker morphology, nest architecture, and mitochondrial DNA against every known member of the genus.
The discovery matters less for any single colony than for what it adds back to a regional picture that has been quietly fragmenting. The Eastern Rhodopes, a biodiversity hotspot stitched across the Bulgarian-Greek border, have yielded a steady stream of new and re-validated invertebrates over the last decade. Messor odrysarum slots into that ledger as the first Bulgarian endemic in a Mediterranean harvester-ant lineage that researchers had, until now, traced chiefly to Greece, Anatolia, and the Levant. The find suggests the southern Balkans function as a refuge and a speciation cradle, not merely a corridor between better-known faunas to the south and east.
A long paper trail in a small ant
The Odrysian name is doing real taxonomic work. Messor is a genus of seed-harvesting ants whose workers are large, sculptural, and patient: colonies can persist for decades, milling through grasses and stripping chaff into subterranean granaries. The genus has been revised repeatedly across the Mediterranean basin, and several "species" described in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have been quietly collapsed into synonymy as DNA barcoding tightened the boundaries. Messor odrysarum lands in that conversation as a distinct, well-supported lineage, with consistent differences in the sculpturing of the worker head and propodeum and a clearly separated mitochondrial lineage from its closest relatives.
Lapeva-Gjonova's team has been working the Rhodope foothills for years, and the Bulgarian ant fauna has gained an unusually detailed recent catalogue in the process. Naming a species after the Odrysians, a Thracian people whose kingdom once dominated this same range, places the discovery inside a regional tradition of natural history that runs from classical ethnography to twentieth-century Bulgarian zoology. The gesture is small, but it registers a quiet institutional fact: taxonomy is increasingly led by researchers working in the countries where the specimens are found, not only by the European and North American museums that historically named everything first.
A refuge, not a corridor
The dominant biogeographic story for the Balkans in recent decades has been that of a crossroads, a land bridge where species move north into Central Europe or south into the Mediterranean. Messor odrysarum complicates that picture. The new species is not a peripheral population of a Greek or Turkish taxon; it is, by the genetic and morphological evidence collected so far, its own branch of the Messor tree, rooted in the dry grasslands and juniper scrub of the Rhodope foothills. That is the signature of long-term local survival through Pleistocene glaciations, when warm-adapted insects retreated to pockets of suitable habitat rather than shifting wholesale.
For conservation planners, the implication is that the Eastern Rhodopes should be managed less as a transit zone and more as an evolutionary arena in its own right. The region already hosts relict Mediterranean and steppe species, and the Natura 2000 network across the Bulgarian-Greek border has been the operational tool for keeping those populations intact. A new endemic ant sharpens the case that the area's insect fauna is not interchangeable with that of the Pindus, the Taurus, or the Strandzha.

Read against the wider literature, Messor odrysarum is one of several recent finds nudging the Mediterranean's insect map south-eastward. New Messor species have been described from Anatolia, the Levant, and the Greek Peloponnese in the last five years, while older European taxa have been revised downward. The pattern is not that the Mediterranean is more biodiverse than previously thought; it is that the sampling effort, and the share of that effort led by regional institutions, has finally caught up with the underlying biological reality.
That matters for the way European biodiversity policy is justified. The EU's nature-restoration targets rest on inventories that are, in many invertebrate groups, decades out of date. Each well-described endemic in a national fauna is a small but defensible argument for retaining the protected-area networks that took decades to assemble. An ant is not a lynx; it does not move voters or ministers. But the cumulative weight of named, mapped, endemic invertebrates is what gives a Natura 2000 site its legal and scientific standing when budgets are tight.
What is still uncertain
The publication establishes that Messor odrysarum is distinct; it does not yet settle how many colonies exist, how the species is distributed across the Greek side of the Rhodopes, or how it interacts with the better-known Messor species whose range margins overlap with it. Worker morphology in Messor is famously variable, and the authors are careful to anchor their conclusion in mitochondrial DNA rather than in single-specimen measurements. Future work will need to test whether the new species holds its diagnostic characters across the full range, and whether it has any close kin on the Turkish side of the range.
For now, the discovery adds a credible new line to a regional fauna, and another small argument for treating the Eastern Rhodopes as a place where species originate, not just where they pass through.
