Ebola's fastest outbreak meets a faster rumour problem in eastern DRC
The current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the fastest-expanding on record, and a parallel epidemic of rumours is now driving attacks on the very clinics trying to contain it.

On 9 July 2026, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention put a number on what its officials have been describing for weeks: the Ebola outbreak now raging in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the fastest-growing the world has ever recorded. The count of cases in the first six weeks is double that of the deadliest earlier epidemic, the 2013-2016 West Africa outbreak, the agency said. The same day, in a separate report from the same region, the BBC documented the parallel crisis compounding the medical one: false claims about what Ebola is, who is spreading it, and what treatment centres do to patients are now driving violent attacks on health workers and assaults on facilities.
The two threads are not coincidental. They are the same outbreak, viewed from two sides of the same clinic gate.
The speed of the curve
Africa CDC's framing, carried in The Africa Report, treats the early trajectory as the headline. The 2013-2016 epidemic ultimately killed more than 11,000 people across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone; it took several months for the curve to bend. The current DRC outbreak has accumulated twice that rate of new cases inside six weeks, which is what makes the comparison meaningful and the warning sharp. The faster the case count rises, the narrower the window in which contact tracers, vaccinators and burials teams can contain transmission before it outruns the response.
The DRC has lived with Ebola for decades. The current episode is unfolding in eastern provinces where health systems already run on fumes, where armed groups have displaced millions, and where community trust in outside responders is thin to begin with. That context is the reason the doubling matters: this is not a benchmark being set in a vacuum, it is a benchmark being set against the worst-case template.
A rumour problem with a body count
The BBC's reporting, published hours earlier the same day, gives the rumour economy a name and a body count. False claims circulating in affected communities have been linked to attacks on treatment facilities, assaults on health workers and disruptions to burials. The mechanics vary. Some rumours portray foreign responders as the source of the disease rather than the cure. Others cast suspicion on safe burial protocols that require teams to handle bodies in ways traditional custom forbids. The BBC documents incidents in which treatment centres have been entered by force and staff threatened. The result is a response architecture that is, in places, physically unsafe to operate.
This is the older, harder problem. Vaccine technology, ring-fencing protocols and rapid diagnostics have advanced considerably since 2018, when an earlier DRC outbreak in Équateur was contained using a Merck-produced vaccine. The 2018-2020 North Kivu outbreak, fought in and around active combat zones, ran more than two years and killed more than 2,000 people. The bottleneck in each case was not clinical capacity. It was access.
Where the global response usually fails
The pattern repeats. Outbreak control works fastest where the state is credible, where the health system is staffed, and where the population trusts the responders in front of them. It falters where any of those three conditions collapses. The DRC's eastern provinces have been a case study in all three failure modes for years. The current outbreak sits inside a wider displacement crisis driven by armed groups; the populations most at risk of exposure are also the populations least able to reach a clinic, and least likely to trust it if they do.
The Global South health-policy critique, which the current outbreak is already drawing on from Addis Ababa to Geneva, runs along familiar lines: outbreaks that begin in poor, conflict-affected regions are detected late, responded to slowly, and treated as humanitarian emergencies rather than as the global health threats they quickly become. Africa's CDC leadership has made that argument publicly for years, including in its 2022 call for the African Medicines Agency to be properly resourced so that vaccine and therapeutic trials coordinated on the continent are not always waiting on Geneva or Washington. The current outbreak is being cited, in real time, as the bill for that delay.
The stakes over the next four weeks
The window is short. Africa CDC's doubling figure is a six-week statistic; the next four weeks will determine whether containment follows the 2018 North Kivu trajectory, which took two years and a heavy human toll to wind down, or whether vaccination, contact tracing and safe burials can be brought to scale before transmission finds urban centres. The risk that does most of the damage from here is the same risk that has been doing the damage for weeks: the rumour economy, the attacks on staff, the closure of access.
What is genuinely uncertain is whether the response architecture can absorb both pressures at once. The sources do not specify how many facilities have been forced to suspend operations, nor how many contact-tracing teams have been pulled out of active communes. They do establish that the curve is moving faster than any previous outbreak, and that the people trying to bend it are now working in conditions that the response was never designed to absorb. On the present trajectory, the question is not whether the outbreak gets worse before it gets better. It is whether the responders are still standing when the curve turns.
