What the next seventy-two hours decide
The next test is not wind but water. Co-May's forecast track carries the storm inland through terrain that has been soaked by an unusually wet June, raising the risk of riverine flooding well after the eye passes. China's Ministry of Water Resources has already flagged flood-control capacity at several mid-sized reservoirs in Zhejiang and Anhui. Taiwan's mountainous eastern counties face landslide risk once rainfall totals pass the 300-millimetre mark.
For investors with exposure to coastal electronics manufacturing, the practical question is whether the region's famed just-in-time supply chains can absorb a one-to-two-day shutdown without the cascade effects that the 2021 Suez obstruction produced for unrelated reasons. The longer structural question is whether the three jurisdictions can move from parallel evacuation playbooks toward genuine pre-event coordination.
