Thunder and Pistons Silence Doubters with Commanding 2-0 Series Leads

Beside him, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander matched the 22 points, and Ajay Mitchell added 20 as Oklahoma City beat the Los Angeles Lakers 125-107 to take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semi-finals. Seven hundred miles east, Cade Cunningham closed out the Cleveland Cavaliers with 12 fourth-quarter points, lifting Detroit to its own 2-0 cushion in the East. Both lower seeds, both on their own floors, both staring at a bracket that now tilts in their favour.

The Thunder are 6-0 in these playoffs. That is the headline underneath the headline. No team in the West has pushed them past a single game, and Holmgren's two-way line on Thursday read like a manifesto for why Oklahoma City was built this way: long enough to contest everything above the rim, skilled enough to space from the arc, and connected enough to rotate into four steals without breaking the defensive shell.

The third quarter belongs to Jared McCain

It is one thing to win a playoff game. It is another to break a series open in the twelve minutes after halftime. McCain scored 8 of his 18 points in the third, all on a night when he hit 4 threes and caught Holmgren's highest praise in the post-game exchange: "Every time I see him get a touch, I think it's going in." When asked what he loves about third quarters, McCain offered the kind of line coaches scribble on clipboards: "It's like a new game... You're able to go out there and provide a spark for any opportunity that you get." The Lakers had no answer for the jolt.

The Lakers hear a whistle they cannot unhear

The 18-point final margin obscured a more pointed storyline. "I just wanna win games... It's high stakes, and you got to make plays," Cunningham said afterwards. The Pistons improve to 2-0, with their next home game on May 12, one win from a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals.

What the bracket is telling us

Both series are now schedule-dependent on homecourt continuity. Oklahoma City and Detroit each need one more home win to force a Game 5 and put the conference final matchups under their control. The Thunder host Game 3 on May 10; the Pistons host theirs on May 12. The Western and Eastern Conference Finals draws will be set by whichever lower seed survives a 2-0 hole, a structural detail that gets less airtime than it deserves. A team down 0-2 in a 2-2-1-1-1 format still controls its own building twice. The Lakers and Cavaliers each have to take at least one in Oklahoma City and Detroit, then hold serve, then steal one on the road. The math is not impossible. The margin is.

The Knicks and the other runaway

While the West and East semi-finals were sorting themselves out, New York was finishing its own demolition job. Jalen Brunson scored 33 points, including the buckets that mattered late, and the Knicks pushed Philadelphia to the brink with a 3-0 series lead. A fourth win, anywhere, sends New York to the next round and shortens the conference's decision tree considerably. The bracket is tipping toward upsets built on continuity rather than chaos, with three of the four lower-seeded teams in the second round now holding multi-game advantages.

The series that will not be over quickly

The Thunder have been the league's best regular-season team for two years running, and Holmgren's two-way line on Thursday was the kind of performance that justifies every minute the front office spent constructing the roster around him. The Pistons, less fancied, have something more elemental: a closer who treats the fourth quarter like a possession he owns. The Lakers and Cavaliers will protest, regroup, and likely win a game at home, because 2-0 leads in conference semi-finals fall roughly a third of the time. But the question is no longer whether these series will swing back to Oklahoma City and Detroit. It is how many games each team needs to close before the conference finals begin. Holmgren and Cunningham are not asking permission. They are keeping score.
