On the morning of 7 May 2026, two unverified cross-border drone incidents moved through European media channels within hours of each other: a reported drone encounter over St. Petersburg, and an alleged incursion into Latvian airspace that was first attributed to Russia and later walked back. Neither claim has been confirmed by independent OSINT or by NATO air policing assets, and the sourcing on both sits at the weaker end of the public record. What follows is what the available sources actually say, what they don't, and why the asymmetry in coverage is itself the story.
The information environment on 7 May was built almost entirely from Telegram channels aligned with one side of each story, then picked up by monitoring desks. The St. Petersburg claim moved through DDGeopolitics and Readovka, two Russian-adjacent channels with established audiences inside the military-commentary ecosystem, before surfacing in a Euronews monitoring feed. The Latvia incident traveled on a different path: an initial alert from Baltic state security services, then a rapid attribution revision that received far less amplification than the original alarm. The St. Petersburg thread

DDGeopolitics and Readovka both carried the claim within their standard rapid-post format, the kind of short, declarative alert that has become the native format for airspace incidents in this corner of the information ecosystem. Readovka's coverage emphasised Russian air-defence activity, while DDGeopolitics framed it as part of a wider pattern of provocation.
The Euronews monitoring feed that picked up the St. Petersburg claim did not independently confirm it. The placement was prominent inside Russian state-adjacent channels and selective inside European monitoring infrastructure, which is not the same as confirmation. No Russian Ministry of Defence statement, no Russian MOD briefing channel, no Russian official spokesperson statement on the record with a major wire has been located in the public sources for this incident. The absence is itself a tell: incidents of this kind, when confirmed, generate official statements within hours. The silence from the formal Russian state apparatus, alongside the loud Telegram chatter, is the pattern Monexus has learned to read.
The Latvia thread
The Latvia incident moved differently. Initial reporting from Baltic security services indicated a drone incursion, with early attribution pointed at Russia. Within a matter of hours, that attribution was revised, and the revision received materially less coverage than the initial alarm. This is a known dynamic in coverage of Baltic airspace: the first claim travels on urgency, the correction travels on a slower, quieter distribution curve. For the Latvia incident, the sourcing came from Baltic state security services. Baltic security services have a strong professional track record on airspace incidents, but attribution on drone incursions is technically harder than on manned aircraft incursions. The reverse-engineered flight path of a small drone, the recovered component analysis, the cross-check against NATO air-policing radar tracks: none of this happens in the first hours of an incident.
